Features of dialogue and conversation
Anacoluthon:
A feature of conversation used on a daily basis where the speaker topic shifts during mid-sentence.
E.g. She said that... omg look at that bus!
: I think you could... did i tell you that I got asked for ID!
This suggests a lost train of thought or an important idea that needs to be said.
Hedge:
-A stalling technique used to complete an utterance or sentence
-Gives the speaker more time to think and then speak
-Used when a person is unsure of how to react/act to an utterance
-Less direct/soften a blow
-Used by salesmen
E.g. Well it could be done...
Could you possibly...
Maybe you can...
Hesitations:
-Used to indicate a pause
-To give the speaker thinking time
-Spontaneous
E.g. Stage directions: (Pause) (......)
Transcripts: (1) number of seconds
Overlaps and interruptions:
Shows the relationship and status between the characters/speakers, this can be either an interruption or overlap because the person is excited/being rude or trying to regain control of the conversation.
False starts
Starting a sentence or utterance but then stopping and starting again.
E.g. I can give you...mm no I can't
